Chapter 10

Dylan shut off the shower, his mind elsewhere while he grabbed a towel to wrap around his waist. Kate had been out of the hospital for a week, and yesterday Aeron returned to work. He’d only done a half-day shift, and Dylan hadn’t the chance to talk to him, other than to quickly ask after Kate. But this evening he’d be seeing them both. They’d repeated the dinner invitation he’d received before Kate’s fall, the only difference being Aeron would be the one cooking.

Dylan looked forward to it. He liked Kate, and he’d missed Aeron. Yeah, both him and his wolf. And didn’t his wolf just love it! His feelings for the young man were growing, and he couldn’t keep on denying them. His wolf became increasingly agitated in its desire to bond, but despite his growing feelings, he wasn’t quite there yet. Not able to fully move on from Nikos, or his need for revenge.

“Fuck.” He stared at his rugged features in the bathroom mirror, and cursed his situation. If he did nothing, at some point he’d lose Aeron. He frowned. Probably sooner rather than later. Look at him, for Christ’s sake. Not exactly pretty. Not for the first time, he wondered what the hell someone with such model looks saw in someone like him. With his battered face and his scars.

No matter how much he tried to ignore it, in reality he detested the jagged mark slashed across his face. Not because of mere vanity, but because of the memories it dragged up. Memories of all he’d loved getting wiped out and destroyed. Only Dylan, his sister, and their uncle had survived the violent attack on their pack.

And Dylan nearly didn’t survive. He’d been hurt so badly, he couldn’t change form for days, and so his healing took a long time. The bastards had used silver to cause optimal damage. Even with his uncle’s gift of blood, his life hung in the balance for the first three days. It all meant that instead of his broken nose healing within a day or two, it took ages, as if he were human. Same with the deep gash the man’s silver knife left across his mouth and jaw. The attack left him with a bump on his nose and a deep scar across his face. Both of which stood out amongst shifters, marking him as different. Most shifters healed so quickly they rarely scarred, and few of them faced attacks by hunters carrying silver weapons.

When he’d met Luke, Dylan had spent his time around a bunch of shifters who glowed with preternatural health. All glossy hair, white teeth and perfect complexions. Not him! He carried the memory of the day he lost his parents, as a stark reminder on his skin of the damage humans sometimes caused. Odd then he’d ended up working with humans, tracking the worst of their fugitives.

He snorted. Rather, he used to work with humans. He’d failed there as well. With a last disgusted look at himself, he ambled into the bedroom and stared at his phone.
